First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education

Prairie Valley School Division is located in Treaty 4 Territory. Treaty 4 was signed on September 15, 1874 in Fort Qu'Appelle.  Treaty 4 encompasses the lands of the Nehiyaw (Cree), Anishinabek (Saulteaux), Dakota (Santee/Isantee), Nakota (Nakoda), Lakota (Tetawan), and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. We will respect and honour the Treaties that were made on all territories, we acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and we are committed to move forward in partnership with First Nations and Métis Nation in the spirit of reconciliation.

 

Prairie Valley School Division has a three-year treaty education plan focusing on teacher professional development, student resources, and support for division wide Treaty education. As part of the process, teachers are encouraged to visit the Office of the Treaty Commissioner website.

 

Saskatchewan is committed to strengthening partnerships between First Nations and non-First Nations people in Saskatchewan in the spirit of the Treaties. The instruction in the history and content of the Treaties is mandatory in the provincial K–12 system.

 

 

Through consultation with First Nations communities we will confirm and extend the Indigenous Education Vision in PVSD and establish a model to actualize the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action 62-65. 

 

 

Prairie Valley School Division students and staff participate in cultural celebrations and gatherings. Some of which include feasts, sweats, round dances, the annual Treaty 4 Fall Celebrations, and powwows. 

 

 

Prairie Valley School Division students engage in learning related to treaty education and Truth and Reconciliation. This work strengthens our understanding of who we are, where we come from, and our role as treaty people.

 

Students in Indian Head and the surrounding area are invited to participate in the Michif Pre-Kindergarten program at Indian Head Elementary School. This specialized program is tailored to provide early childhood education to offer a culturally relevant and enriching educational experience. With a deep commitment to honoring Métis culture, language, and traditions, the program aims to instill a strong sense of cultural identity in students while equipping them with the foundational skills needed for success in school and beyond.
