Glimpses From Gord: March 2026

As we flipped the calendar to March, we entered one of those truly transitional months on the prairies. While winter holds on a little longer than we’d like, the sun lingers later each day and hints of spring begin to show. It is a time of change, energy, and anticipation, both in our communities and in our schools.

March sounds the final buzzer of junior basketball across Prairie Valley, and I want to congratulate all the teams that participated this season. Whether you were lacing up for the first time or building upon years of experience, you represented your schools with pride, teamwork, and determination. Thank you for giving us so much to cheer for.

For our senior teams, March means playoff time. High school basketball is now in its most intense stretch of the year as teams push toward a coveted spot at Hoopla. Best of luck to all our athletes, coaches, and supportive families as you head into final games. You’ve already accomplished so much, and we’re proud of you.

High school curling is also sliding into the house this month. Curling continues to be an important part of school sport traditions across Saskatchewan, and our Prairie Valley teams demonstrated strong skill, sportsmanship, and a whole lot of heart this season. Well done to all who competed throughout the winter season.

None of these opportunities would exist without the commitment of the many teachers and community volunteers who coach, drive, mentor, and organize. Your time and leadership give our students experiences that shape their confidence, friendships, and sense of belonging. Thank you for everything you do; your impact extends far beyond the court, ice, or gymnasium.

Just as March brings transition in our schools, it brings transition in our communities. For many of our rural towns the rink is the winter hub, the heartbeat of community life. As ice melts and daylight stretches, the gathering places will soon shift to playgrounds, ball diamonds, walking paths, and backyards (once everything finally dries out!). It’s another reminder of how deeply connected our schools are to the rhythm of the communities we serve.

March also brings seasonal celebrations for many cultures. As we approach the spring equinox, this is an important time for several First Nations that recognize the return of longer days as a period of renewal, balance, and gratitude. Across our division, we are grateful for the teachings and cultural perspectives shared by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and families. Spring reminds us of growth, connection, and the importance of caring for one another, values we strive to uphold in Prairie Valley.

On March 8, we marked International Women’s Day, a time to celebrate the women and girls who uplift, inspire, and strengthen our schools and communities. In Prairie Valley, our commitment to inclusion means recognizing and valuing the leadership of women, students, staff, caregivers, and community members. Thank you for the countless ways you lead with compassion, skill, and courage.

March is a busy month, but also an energizing one. As snowbanks shrink and spring edges in, I hope everyone finds time to enjoy the warmer days, cheer on our athletes, and take a moment to appreciate the many people who make Prairie Valley such a strong and caring division.

Wishing everyone a wonderful month ahead.
