Building the School Year Calendar Show Transcript Did you know creating the school calendar is a complex process with many pieces to consider? School has to start after Labor Day and end by June 30th. Stat holidays must be factored in, along with school breaks mandated by the provincial Education Act. A minimum of 950 student hours and a maximum of 1044 teacher hours are required, and local and provincial employee contracts have to be taken into account. Let's do the math. In the 2024-25 school year there are a maximum of two hundred and fifteen days after Labor Day to the end of June. We take out 18 days for Holiday breaks and an additional five stat days Next we account for 14 non student days related to local and provincial employee contracts and agreements and Board of Education determinations. Some of these occur in late August but most need to be placed in the school calendar. Once these are included, plus another day to round out the Christmas break, we arrive at 181 days. This ensures our Education Act requirements are met and we fall within the parameters for student hours and teacher hours. While there is very little flexibility in how our school calendar is configured, we make sure it maximizes in class learning time, providing students with the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
