When I joined Prairie Valley School Division as Director of Education three months ago, I knew I faced the challenge of being the 'new guy', in a large school division. I also knew that as the 'new guy' I needed to build trust and be authentic, especially in my interactions with students, parents/guardians, staff, and our Board of Education.
In August, I had the opportunity to meet with our school based administrators and speak to all of you during our professional development day. I must say, I was incredibly nervous, knowing this was my only chance to make a good first impression. I was truly grateful for the intense support I received before and after those two events. I am deeply appreciative to feel so welcomed!
Building trust takes time, but the only way to encourage people to be part of a team/solution is to understand how you can best support them. Investing your time with people, to learn how to serve them better, is the second step of my leadership journey. That includes getting out to our schools and communities.
By the end of September, I will have been able to visit with the students and staff in 10 of our 39 schools. These visits have been truly amazing, and it's been inspiring to see the excitement and enthusiasm in our schools during the first month of school. I am also encouraged with the level of pride each school has for the great work that is accomplished daily.
I'd like to thank all of you for your efforts in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Honouring and commemorating the history of residential schools is a vital component of our reconciliation journeys. Our students are participating in some exceptional learning related to this journey in our schools not just today, but throughout the school year. I am proud to be part of Prairie Valley's commitment to truth and reconciliation.
This year, I intend to share more about the work happening behind the scenes and to celebrate the wonderful people making a difference in our division. Check back at the end of each month for updates like this one. Take care, have a great day, and remember the glass is also half full! Enjoy the fall colours!
