Last year, the students developed a Trading Post Simulation for the annual Treaty 4 Gathering which involved learning about historical and social justice issues along with economic principles related to the fur trade such as supply and demand, specialization, division of labor, resource extraction, mark-up, perceived value, value of goods, budgeting, return on investment, fungibility, uniformity, divisibility, industrialization, free market, equivalencies and trade. The activity was well received at the Treaty 4 Gathering, was featured in Eagle Feather News, on Aboriginal Peoples' Television Network (APTN), and received the Bank of Canada Museum's Award for Excellence in Teaching Economics.
Deputy Governor Kozicki was appreciative of the class's project and invited the students to attend her Regina lecture which was attended by industry figures, policy makers, university students and professors. The Bert Fox students were welcomed with front row reserved seats and specifically mentioned in Kozicki's address. She also took some time before the presentation to talk to the students directly and to also thank them for coming.
Through the experience, the students were able to learn about different career opportunities they may not have heard about in school.
